Description

Window Restrictor for Aluminium Windows

Window restrictors are used for child proofing windows. The restrictor is spring loaded, and it will automatically catch every time the window is opened. It stops the window from opening more than a few inches, thus preventing children from accidentally opening the window and falling out. This is a great solution, as it allows the window to be opened for ventilation but also takes the worry out of an opened window.

This window restrictor can be released to allow the window to be opened fully. This complies with the building regulations that state that any restriction device must be releaseable in the event of any emergency and cannot be locked with a key.

As an additional benefit, this restrictor will prevent accidental damage caused by the wind. It is very common for windows to be left open and get damaged as a result of strong winds or storms.

STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS. S.I. No. 17 of 2017 HOUSING (STANDARDS FOR RENTED HOUSES) REGULATIONS: Regulation 4. Structural Condition – part 3
“Where a window has an opening section through which a person may fall, and the bottom of the opening section is more than 1400mm above external ground level, suitable safety restrictors shall be fitted. Safety restrictors shall restrain the window sufficiently to prevent such falls.”

Technical Guidance Document B – Fire Safety 2006: Windows for Escape or Rescue – 1.5.6 (e)
“The opening section of the window should be secured by means of fastenings which are readily openable from the inside and should be fitted with safety restrictors. Safety restrictors can be either an integral part of the window operating gear or separate items of hardware which can be fitted to a window at the time of manufacture or at installation. Restrictors should operate so that they limit the initial movement of an opening section to not more than 100 mm. Lockable handles or restrictors, which can only be released by removable keys or other tools, should not be fitted to window opening sections.”

Fitting Instructions

Check the amount of clearance you have at the bottom of your sash. Place the stud plate on the frame and close the sash. If the sash hits the stud plate, fit the restrictor on the top of the sash instead of the bottom. If the sash misses the stud plate, fit the restrictor on the bottom of the sash

  1. The stud plate should be fitted to the underside of the sash. There will be a groove that runs the whole way around the sash. It will be the exact same width as the stud plate 16mm. Fix the stud plate with two screws in this groove.
  2. Position the restrictor on the frame in relation to the stud plate. Line up the restrictor so it strikes the edge in front of the gap. Fix the restrictor to the frame with two screws.
  3. Close the sash, the restrictor should strike the stud plate and close.
  4. Open the sash, the restrictor should catch on the stud plate.
